TRAINING TO A SCIENCE

Our training methods were researched and developed by Dr. Kelly Lockwood, PhD, at Brock University's Kinesiology department. Through her research into biomechanics, high performance sport and Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD), Doctor Lockwood has revolutionized modern skating with over 30+ years of research and applied sports science. Her training method is being used at paperweight level, all the way up to the professional levels (NHL, OHL, various other leagues). Kelly's extensive research on Treadmill training has been applied through a comprehensive training program that we use to train skaters. All of our trainers have a Kinesiology degree under Kelly and are trained under her program.

We use Dr. Lockwood’s proven methods at Full Stride Skating Lab today and with improved treadmill technology and a state-of-the-art facility, we have a training program for skaters of all ages and abilities.

  • Learn to Skate

Whether you are new to ice sports or you are a seasoned athlete, it all starts with your first strides. At Full Stride, we welcome athletes of all ages and abilities

  • Stride Analysis & Correction

Our skating treadmills offer athletes a controlled environment that highlights imbalances and allows for trainiers to help make immediate and lasting corrections to your stride

  • Edgework Efficiency

No sport is solely about top speed and ice sports are no exception. The treadmill offers athletes an environment to help develop more technical components to the stride like crossovers, backwards skating and many other ways

  • Stick Handling

Having a strong stride is one thing but being able to maintain good form and an efficient stride with a puck or a ring on your stick is another. We offer drills that will help you keep your speed when you need it most

Benefits

  • Improved Skating Technique

Hockey treadmills provide a controlled environment where players can focus on their skating technique. Our trainers will analyze and correct stride mechanics, balance, and body positioning to help players skate more efficiently and effectively. Can be utilized by beginners to professionals.

  • Increased Speed, Quick starts and Endurance

Regular training on a hockey treadmill can help players develop greater speed, quicker starts with the first few strides and endurance. The constant resistance of the treadmill forces players to work harder, leading to improved cardiovascular fitness and stamina.

  • Enhanced Agility and Balance

Hockey treadmill training can help players develop better agility and balance, which are crucial for on-ice maneuverability. Skating on a treadmill challenges a player's ability to make quick, precise movements.

  • Accelerated Skill Development

Hockey treadmills can be used to work on specific skills such as quick starts, crossovers, Head-up with puck, backward skating and transitions. Players can isolate and improve these skills more effectively than they can on the ice. At advanced stages, players can bring a puck on the treadmill and practice stickhandling.

  • Reduced Risk of Injury

Training on a hockey treadmill can help players build strength and endurance in a controlled environment, reducing the risk of injury when they return to the ice. Proper technique and conditioning can prevent common hockey-related injuries.

  • Year-Round Training

Treadmill training allows players to work on their skating skills year-round, even during the offseason or when ice rinks are unavailable due to weather or maintenance.

  • Video Analysis

Our hockey treadmills are equipped with video playback technology, allowing trainers and players to review their skating form and make necessary adjustments.

  • Customized Workouts

Coaches can design customized workouts tailored to individual players' needs and goals. This personalized approach can lead to more targeted improvements.

  • Mental Conditioning

Training on a treadmill can also help players improve their mental toughness and concentration. It simulates game-like conditions and can be used for visualization and mental preparation.

  • Competitive Edge

As hockey becomes more competitive, players who take advantage of specialized training tools like hockey treadmills will have an edge over their peers.

It's important to note that while hockey treadmill training offers many benefits, it should be part of a comprehensive training program that includes on-ice practice, strength and conditioning exercises, and other aspects of hockey development. Additionally, players should work with qualified coaches or trainers to ensure they are using the treadmill effectively and safely. An unqualified coach/trainer can potentially leave a skater's technique worse then when they started!
